Amy McMichael, MD is an academic dermatologist who loves the intersection of mentoring and encouraging learners of color to strive for success in medicine. She spends her workdays seeing patients, performing research, and teaching and her free time with her family and friends. She loves to travel for work or play and can be found reading a new book each week and thinking about new projects focused on alopecia research.
Dr. Amy McMichael is a Philadelphia native who received her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed her Dermatology residency at the University of Michigan School of Medicine.
She is a Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC and has held leadership positions in the Department for over 20 years. She was Residency Program Director for 12 years and then Chair of the Department for 11 years. After stepping down as Chair in 2022, she continues to wear many hats as a clinician, researcher, teacher, and co-directing a center for racial equity at her medical center.
Her passion is mentorship, and she has formally mentored over 35 students, residents, and young physicians and informally mentored more than 100 learners at all levels of education. She spends 20% of her personal time counselling those who are interested in medicine and dermatology.
When she is not working and mentoring, she enjoys reading, travel, and spending time with her family and friends. This is her first non-fiction book which grew out of her many inspiring interactions with students, residents, and early career physicians.
