About Cory's Book

PERMISSION TO CARE

Building a Healthcare Culture that Thrives in Chaos

Are you tired of feeling like you aren’t permitted to connect with your patients?

Can you envision creating a less sterile healthcare experience?

Pharmacist Cory Jenks had all the elements to make a competent healthcare professional. Good looks, academic accolades, multiple board certifications, and a competitive residency. However, none of these items prepared him for truly caring for his patients in a chaotic healthcare environment, and he was struggling. After implementing lessons he learned as an improv comedian, Cory’s perspective began to shift.

In these pages, Cory takes you through the comical and powerful tools needed to create a memorable, humanizing experience for your patients and colleagues. You’ll learn how to

  • Prepare for the unpredictability of healthcare.
  • Find more joy in your day-to-day work.
  • Express your personality while connecting with your patients.

In whatever capacity you support patients and their families, this book will help you become a dynamic, adaptable, and empathetic caregiver.

Love your book. I share many of your experiences. Merging completely unrelated disciplines of health care and improv is genius. I’m happily shocked that U of AZ Pharmacy has included it in their curriculum. It reminds me of Scott Adams’ (creater of Dilbert cartoon) book “How to Fail at Everything and Still Win Big”. Adams explains that real innovation requires combining skills that have never been combined before. Spoiler alert: Adams admits: not very funny, terrible banker and poor artist. But the combination was a huge success. Keep up the good work Cory Jenks.

I too am a pharmacist with Improv experience. As a clinician, educator and entrepreneur, I can honestly say that the skills I learned performing Improv have been as valuable or more valuable than any others. There is no better example of this than the passion that Cory brings to this art form and his commitment to patient care. You will love this book!

Really enjoyed Cory's take on adding more open-mindedness and humor to our health care system. You can be serious in taking care of patients and have fun at it all at the same time. With all of the struggles of the health care system it's nice to encounter a more optimistic approach.

Wonderful explaination of how humor can improve healthcare, lessons can be applied to any industy!

Easy read that explores how medical professionals adding their own form of humor to their bed side manner can improve quality of care and patient outcomes. I do not work in the healthcare industry but took away a number of lessons that are applicable to the IT field I work in. My synopsis in a nutshell is that when we are genuine people at work we achieve better outcomes. Being genuine means blending humor into the good and the bad times so the ups are higher and downs not so low.

I really enjoyed this book and it exceeded my expectations. A lot of practical advice that anyone in healthcare can use (not just pharmacists). I love the comedic timing and can’t remember the last time I laughed this much while reading a non-fiction book. I love the personal touch as it makes the content much more relatable. The authors voice is easy to read and makes following along so much easier and makes it a quick read.

Cory provides a fresh and different perspective. Looking from a different lense and a different angle at problems and issues that we face on daily basis in our healthcare system whatever your profession is and wherever you provide care to patients. Incoming providers especially the incoming class of pharmacists or those considering becoming pharmacists but hear all the horror stories about pharmacy, read this book and realize that it is what you make it to be and you want to be. Go in with an open mindset of providing care and providing solutions to your patients and your fellow healthcare providers.

What I needed to hear working in health care right now!!

Cory Jenks did an amazing job bringing humor, healthcare, and healing together. As a NP working in pulmonary during a global pandemic to say I felt burned out would be an understatement. Chapter 8: wider not deeper really summarized my frustration. We keep getting more and more boxes we have to tick with each visit from management/insurance/patient satisfaction surveys/ accrediting bodies which ultimately take away from a successful patient-provider visit. People go into health care to CARE, not just check boxes. Jenks did an excellent job reminding me to keep my focus on the depth of the visit and patient relationship.

As a healthcare provider for the past decade, I have grown to feel a certain way about how we're expected to practice/perform (to say the least). Cory is not afraid to speak plainly about the areas where we can improve and provides a unique perspective on how we can ALL do better for our patients. Bridging our dry healthcare personalities with the "yes, and" improv concepts, Cory hopes to bring the HUMor back to HUManity in the medical community. I highly recommend this book to anyone who often feels jaded with administrative practice expectations and wants to get back to patient focused care.

I read a lot of leadership/management/self-help books and this is one of my favorites. As a community pharmacist I have experienced burnout, frustration, and aggravation with the healthcare system and unfortunately, patients. Dr. Jenks offers a fresh and comedic take to help make your day and career better. Just realizing how much repeatedly telling patients "no" was draining me was eye opening. I highly recommend this book for a new and unique mindset of healthcare and life.

Cory is an insightful healthcare professional who has highlighted here the basics of improv through the lens of taking care of our patients. I would recommend this not only to healthcare professionals but also to company reps, healthcare admins, and anyone who wants to remember why we do what we do. This was a quick read and would also make a great gift!
